HUD Exchange

HUD is the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. This page, in particular, is filled with contacts and resources that link those in need with HUD’s network of community partners. In addition to housing, the list includes food, health and safety, and assistance for veterans.

The HUD Exchange also includes a link that will take you to, where you can learn about how best to prepare for emergencies and disasters. One section in particular — “Make A Plan” — is a page you might want to bookmark for future reference. But be sure to look through their suggestions now so you at least have an idea of what will be necessary in case the unthinkable becomes reality.

Emergency Solutions Grant

From “The purpose of the Emergency Solutions Grants (ESG) program is to assist individuals and families quickly regain stability in permanent housing after experiencing a housing crisis or homelessness. ESG provides grants by formula to states, metropolitan cities, urban counties and U.S. territories to support homelessness prevention, emergency shelter and related services.”

Similarly, this page on covers the Individuals and Households Program (IHP).

“After a Presidential disaster declaration is made,” they write, “you may be eligible for disaster assistance, including grant assistance, from the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Federal Assistance to Individuals and Households Program (IHP). After you register with FEMA for disaster assistance, FEMA will consider you for several sorts of IHP assistance, including grants to repair or replace your damaged primary residence, and temporary housing assistance (including rental assistance).”
